If an athlete wants to win a state medal, he/she has to get to state. Competition, injuries, misfortune all play a role at the district and state level. Many Axtell and Wilcox-Hildreth tracksters will go on for that chance at state hardware by qualifying via the eleven-team D-7 district at Kenesaw on May 9.
Teamwise, Axtell's boys continued their unbeaten season by scoring 150 points to win the district championship. Kenesaw (84) was second, Bertrand (68) third and Wilcox-Hildreth (34) seventh. The Cat boys are legitimate Class D team title contenders but will have limited services from Braiden Gomez, who tweaked a hip injury and will compete in just one or maybe two events.
On the girls' side Axtell (76) was runner-up to Bertrand (98). Loomis (54) and Elwood (54) were tied for third with Wilcox-Hildreth (43.5) in seventh just a half point out of fifth.
