Barb Otto visited with the Kearney County Board of Supervisors at the May 22 regular meeting about placing the national motto ‘In God We Trust’ in the Kearney County courthouse. The O’Neill woman has been to 57 of the 93 counties in Nebraska to make the same request.
Otto explained that she accepted the challenge to be part of the ‘In God We Trust - America’ campaign several years ago. The organization was started in Bakersfield, California by City Councilmember Jacquie Sullivan. Their mission is to promote patriotism across the nation by encouraging elected officials to display the national motto in their chambers. Otto promotes the efforts of the non-profit organization with no compensation.
She provided a sample resolution should the supervisors choose to approve the legal display of the motto. She also showed examples of displays other counties have erected after voting yes. Otto told the supervisors that many of the signs were inexpensive and she doesn’t recommend using taxpayer money. She also informed the board free legal assistance will be provided if they choose to join the campaign and legal action is brought against them for the decision.
