The Axtell Area Oratorio Society presents George Frideric Handel’s ‘Messiah’ Palm Sunday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Merryman Performing Arts Center in Kearney.
We welcome you to this 60th Anniversary of Messiah by the Axtell Area Oratorio Society. J. Rodney Wendell directed Handel’s Messiah for the first time on Sunday, March 30, 1958 at 3:00 p.m. in the Axtell Public School Auditorium. The soloists were Mary Ann Erickson (soprano), Marjorie Wendell (alto), Rev. Lauren Youngdale (tenor) and Roland Nyquist (bass). The choir was accompanied by Elaine Turnquist of Axtell, a string ensemble from the Lincoln Symphony and Glen Reinertson of North Platte was the organist.
The chorus comprised about 70 members from Axtell, Holdrege, Minden, Wilcox, Hildreth, Funk and Loomis. Many were members of Mr. Wendell’s Axtell Mastersingers. Today we have multiple generations of families singing in the chorus and enjoying the tradition together.
