Ward Nelson - July 05, 2013


ears of age, of rural Wilcox, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013, at Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege.
Ward was born Dec. 19, 1927, on the family farm, south of Axtell in Kearney County, the second of four children born to Stanley and Eva (Matson) Nelson.
He was baptized on April 29, 1928, by Pastor Frank Edwards.
Ward received his primary education at the District 15 rural school in Phelps County through the eighth grade and then graduated from the Wilcox High School with the Class of 1945.
Following his education, Ward was inducted into the United States Army on June 12, 1951, and took his basic training at Ft. Riley, Kan., and was then stationed in Tokyo in Special Services until his honorable discharge as Corporal on May 19, 1953.
On Aug. 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to RoJean E. Jesse at the St. John’s Lutheran Church south of Wilcox and to this union two sons were born: Kevin and Kirk. They lived in the Wilcox rural area all their married life. He farmed his entire life, which he loved and was his true passion in life. Ward was so proud his two sons took over the farming.
He served on the Wilcox School Board, Wilcox Co-op Board and the Fridhem Church Board.
For several years he also enjoyed bowling. His retirement years he spent a great deal of time on the computer sending emails to many friends.
Ward was a member of the Wilcox American Legion Post 377 and the V.F.W. of Hildreth. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Holdrege for many years, member of the Wilcox Lions Club for 50 years and was very active in the Lions including serving as District Governor from 1969 to 1970.
He and RoJean attended many International Lions Conventions including a trip to Tokyo in 1969, when their sons were able to accompany them. Ward also held many offices in the local and State Lions. Most of all, Ward loved to attend his grandchildren’s school activities and was so very proud of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Nelson in infancy and Dale Nelson; sister, Bonnie Collison; sisters-in-law, Idella and Winnie Nelson; brothers-in-law, Jim Collison, Gary Heimsoth and Delbert Davisson.
He is survived by his wife, RoJean; sons, Kevin Nelson and Kirk Nelson and wife, Christy all of Wilcox; grandchildren, Heather Hohlfeld and husband, Adam of Holdrege, Jenessa Keiser and husband, Beau of Lincoln, and Matthew and Michael Nelson of Wilcox; great-granddaughter, Ava Hohlfeld; sisters-in-law, Mariann Davisson of Franklin, Marilyn Heimsoth of Omaha, Augusta Johnsen and husband, Dale of Wilcox, Betty Hunt and husband, Ron of Hildreth and Barbara Sanders and husband, Leon of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk on July 9 with the Rev. Darrel Wissmann officiating.
Interment was in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 377 of Wilcox in conjunction with the United States Army Military Honors Team.
A memorial has been established in Ward’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
