Ernest Johnson - July 02, 2013

Ernest L. Johnson, 90 years of age from Minden, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Ernie was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Franklin County near Upland to Falk and Matilda (Hansen) Johnson.
He grew up in that area and graduated from Upland High School in 1939.
In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy and served until honorably discharged in 1948.
In 1950 he married Nancy Wicker from Shelbyville, Ill. They farmed in the Hildreth area for 10 years and then moved to Minden where they owned and operated Hi-Way Liquor. He was then the proprietor of several businesses in Nebraska and Illinois and later Ernie’s Drive In.
Ernie liked playing cards with his family, going to dances, and tending to his fruit trees. He was very proud of serving in World War II and enjoyed going to Navy reunions.
Survivors include his daughters, Victoria Thompson and husband, Robert of Milligan, Janet Kile of Minden and Lori Kirkpatrick and husband, Ray of Fremont; grandchildren, Adam Bunker and wife, Katie of Lincoln, Dori Bunker of Milligan, Brandi Waugh of Omaha, Chad Waugh and Allison Beach of Norton, Kan., Danny Kile of Lincoln, Cory Crawford and wife, Staci of Omaha, Kelly Crawford of Hastings; great- granddaughter, Reghan Chrisjohn; brother, Don Johnson of Minden; and sister, Ardyce Mae Cronin and husband, Dave of Sacramento, Calif.
He is preceded in death by great-grandson, Gage Waugh; former spouse, Nancy Johnson; two brothers and three sisters.
Memorial services were at the Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden July 6 with the Revs. Baron and Nancy Cole officiating.
Burial was in the Minden Cemetery with military rites provided by the Minden American Legion, Heartwell VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden was in charge of arrangements.
