A Celebration of Life service for James O. “Jim” Jones will be conducted from the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. W. Kirwin Stewart Jr., officiating.
Private family inurnment will be held at the Minden Cemetery prior to the services with military honors provided by the Minden American Legion Post 94 in conjunction with the United States Air Force Military Honors Team.
James Owen “Jim” Jones, 84 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Jim was born May 1, 1929, at Minden, the third of five children born to Harold and Maude (Crabtree) Jones.
He was baptized and confirmed from the Christian Church in Minden.
Jim received his education from Minden Public Schools, graduating from Minden High School with the Class of 1949.
Following his education, he was inducted into the United States Air Force on Sept. 26, 1950, and served with the 3380th Air Police Squadron until his honorable discharge on Nov. 5, 1953 as a Staff Sergeant.
Following his service to his country, Jim continued a career with Southern Public Power District in Grand Island, Minden and later Holdrege as a lineman and later became involved with management until his retirement in 1991.
He was united in marriage to Maxine L. Shannon on Dec. 27, 1950, at Minden and to this union four sons were born: Michael, Mark, Dan and Steve.
Following his retirement, Jim enjoyed his time with family, golfing with friends, traveling, especially wintering in Pharr, Texas.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, where he served as an Elder and choir director for several years, member of the Holdrege Country Club, and past member of the Elks Lodge.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark in infancy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hubert and Anna Shannon; a great-grandson, Jace Ryan Jones; sisters: Eula Dunlap and husband, Earl and Catherine Maxon; brother, Willis Jones and wife, Marian; and brother-in-law, Marvin Deisley.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Maxine of 62 years of Holdrege; sons, Michael Jones of Holdrege, Dan Jones and wife, Mary Jo of Holdrege; and Steve Jones and wife, Sherry of Grand Island; grandchildren, Jeremy Jones and wife, Jody, Josh Jones and wife, Tori, Sara Hammond and husband, Arik, Amy Peterson and husband, Chris, Paul Svoboda and wife, Theresa, Susie Jones, Kip Jones, and Chelsea Schweizer and husband, Kiel; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, LuEllen Jones of Holdrege; sister-in-law, Eleanor Deisley of Gibbon, Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Wesley Shannon and wife, Marcia of Minden and Kenneth Maxon of Washington State; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial has been established in Jim’s honor and kindly suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, Feed My Starving Children or the donor’s choice.
