Helen Poole - January 20, 2013


Helen Maxine Poole, 89 years of age from Axtell, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Bethany Home in Minden.
Helen was born April 28, 1923, in Kearney County in a farmhouse north of Axtell, to Robert and Tilda (Petersen) Biber.
She grew up northeast of Axtell.
Helen attended country school through the eighth grade. She attended high school in Kearney traveling to Kearney and staying in a boarding house during the week and home on the farm for the weekends. She graduated from Kearney High School in 1940.
Helen married G. Warren Poole on Sept. 7, 1941, in Smith Center, Kan. They moved to Los Angeles during World War II, returning to the Midwest and lived in Kansas and Nebraska.
Helen worked as a church custodian, sold Avon, was a church secretary, key-punch operator and worked in an explosives factory while raising her family.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Axtell along with the ladies groups in the church.
She enjoyed spending time at the Axtell Senior Citizens Center and belonged to an Extension Club.
Helen was gifted and had a way of finding a purpose where she could contribute and always helped others in numerous ways. She had her hands full, working and raising three active boys and stayed positive throughout.
Survivors include her sons, Dennis Poole and wife, Connie of Encampment, Wyo., Marshall Poole and wife, Jeanie of Axtell and Robert Poole and wife, Carole of Sunnyvale, Calif.; grandchildren, Robin Blubaugh and husband, Dee of Phillipsburg, Kan., Tom Poole of Martin, Tenn., Jocelyn Poole of Kearney, Lauren Kolowski and husband, David of Loveland, Colo., Matthew Poole and wife, Allison of San Diego, Calif., Robert Poole and wife, Erin of San Jose, Calif., Aaron Poole and wife, Kristine of Concord, Calif., and Timothy Poole and his wife, Laura of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, G. Warren Poole; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Morris Eckloff; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Paul and Albertine Frank and Althea and James Crowder; an infant sister and nephew, Larry Eckloff.
Funeral services were Jan. 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in Axtell with the Rev. Barbara Spangler officiating.
Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Axtell.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Axtell, Prairie View Gardens in Kearney or the Bethany Home in Minden.
Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden was in charge of arrangements.
