Gail Beckstead - December 29, 2012


Gail Lloyd Beckstead, 73 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
Gail was born May 9, 1939, at Omaha, the fourth of five children born to Norris C. and Caroline L. (Seward) Beckstead.
He received his education from Bellevue graduating from Bellevue High School with the Class of 1957. He then pursued higher education from Peru State College, graduating with the Class of 1961 with his bachelor’s degree in education.
On July 1, 1961, he was united in marriage to Terry Louise Young of Bellevue. To this union three children were born: Christy, Jon, and Patrick.
The family made their home in Friend where Gail taught industrial arts and participated in coaching early in his teaching career. He then continued his education at Kearney State College and taught in the Pleasanton Public School system for a year.
He then returned to Friend for seven years, and at this time he started the wrestling program. The family relocated to Holdrege in 1974, where Gail continued his teaching career, teaching industrial education for 27 years in Holdrege. A highlight of his career was also teaching a special needs program. Gail retired when he was 62 years of age in 2001.
He was a member of the Pleasant View Christian Church south of Wilcox.
Throughout the years he was an active member of the volunteer fire departments in Friend and Holdrege. He spent many years as an EMS instructor.
Gail loved being involved and attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. He also enjoyed the time spent at the Harlan County Reservoir with family and friends.
Gail leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Terry, of Holdrege; three children: Christy Nelson and husband, Kirk, of Wilcox, Jon Beckstead and wife, Sammi, of Brainard and Patrick Beckstead and wife, Lynne, of Kearney; grandchildren, Heather Hohlfeld and husband, Adam, Jenessa Keiser and husband, Beau, Matthew and Michael Nelson, Taylor, Rachel, and Hannah Beckstead, and Josh and Nick Follmer; great-granddaughter, Ava Hohlfeld; brothers, Marion Beckstead and wife, Marge, of Bellevue, and Eugene Beckstead and wife, Sue, of Sebastopol, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister born at rest; and a brother, Dewey Beckstead.
A Celebration of Life service was conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege on Jan. 3 with Pastor Bud Gillett officiating.
A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Gail’s honor and kindly suggested to the Holdrege Volunteer Fire Department or the Holdrege Public Schools Foundation.
