The season that the Wilcox-Hildreth football team dreamed of, and that they work so very hard for to see come to fruition, did just that as the Falcons won the six-man state championship 52-40 over Hay Springs on November 16 at UNK’s Foster Field. W-H finished a perfect 12-0 in capturing the consolidated school’s first athletic state title.
The weather—temps in the low 50s, calm winds in the first half, breezy out of the north after halftime—was ideal for a mid-November game.
The Falcons led by four at the conclusion of the opening period but the battle of teams with birds of prey as their mascots was all Hawks for the first 63 seconds of the game. Hay Springs got two TDs before W-H took a snap. The Hawks scored on the second play at 9:41 on a 44-yard pass. The conversion kick was blocked but then HS recovered an onside kick and again scored on the second play on a 40-yard run. The conversion pass failed but at 8:57 the Hawks led 12-0.
