Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed Minden Nebraska’s Christmas City and December 10, 2017 to be Light of the World Day during a ceremony in Lincoln on December 6. Representing Minden at the presentation were Mayor Ted Griess, Councilman Roger Jones, City Administrator Matt Cederburg, and Streets Superintendent Chris Klahn.
Minden as a community has claimed the title of Christmas City for years. Residents and holiday visitors can attest to the suitability of the moniker. Thousands of colored lights are strung from the courthouse and radiate through the surrounding streets, Christmas melodies chime from the courthouse bells, and family friendly holiday events fill the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The traditions began with the hanging of 10,000 hand-dipped bulbs from the courthouse in 1915. For more than 100 years the legacy has continued and grown, drawing visitors from across the state and country. One of the most notable additions to the holiday observance was the introduction of the Light of the World pageant in 1946.
