Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world, is credited with a number of insightful sayings. One of them is ‘You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together we can do great things.’
Be the Gift Nebraska, their volunteers and donors have been working together in 2017 to do some great things for single parent families in the Minden area. Small home repairs were done at no charge to improve the quality of life for the single parents BTG serves. In May and early November during the BTG Work Days, volunteers worked with single parent families to change furnace filters and smoke alarm batteries, clean rain gutters, do yard work, rototill gardens, and other tasks to prepare their homes for a change of season.
Family season passes and lessons at the local swimming pool were purchased, sholarships for the children in single parent families to attend one of two faith based summer camps for a week were provided, and family pictures were taken, edited, and printed during the summer. Donated, locally grown and processed meat was distributed to single parents once every month and donated furniture and appliances were delivered when a need was presented. A Valentine Banquet in February provided a special evening out for single parents and in August, a steak barbecue helped the parents BTG serves and their families celebrate the beginning of a new school year.
