Nebraska experienced some of the most widespread devastation in the state’s history following a ‘bomb cyclone’ that hit the Midwest March 14-15. Heavy rains and rapid snow melt resulted in massive flooding across much of the state. Some evacuated communities are waiting for the waters to recede while others are finally able to begin to clean up and assess damages. A majority of Nebraska counties have declared emergencies and more than $1.3 billion in damages have been reported across the state.
Despite the devastation, citizens have held true to the belief that Nebraskans are always willing to help their neighbor. From livestock rescue efforts to food and shelter donations to fundraising efforts, residents are proving the ‘Nebraska Strong’ logo that has flooded social media isn’t just empty words.
Although Kearney County received its share of damages as a result of the storm, it was spared in comparison to many other counties. Several local groups are pitching in the flood relief efforts with their own collections, drives, and fundraisers.
