During the old Minden High School auction, surplus items and pieces of the building were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Chalkboards, chairs, cabinets, and more were re-homed and repurposed giving buyers a tangible piece of history to hold onto. For those who missed out on purchasing a part of the old Minden High School, there is a new chance available thanks to Grant Newbold and the Kearney County Historical Society.
A Minden graduate from the class of 1969, Newbold has fond memories of the old high school building. Performing in plays, pep rallies, and attending prom in the gym are highlights of not only his high school career, but many others’ as well.
“Watching that building get torn down was a difficult thing. It’s not easy because it’s been like the heart of our community for so long. So I want to make a point to thank the board for the salvage auction,” Newbold said. “A lot of people got a lot of stuff that would have been wasted otherwise. That would have been harder for the community to deal with, I think.”
