The Gold Award is the highest distinction a Girl Scout can earn. Minden High School senior Cheyanne Ellis recently earned the honor with a project to benefit the East Elementary Special Education program.
“I wanted to make my community more aware of Autism,” Ellis said. “I put sensory boards and bottles together for the East Elementary Special Ed class and I had everyone in the high school wear blue for Autism Awareness Day.”
The project tackles two issues: a lack of awareness in the community and a deficiency in sensory exploration tools in the special education classroom. Both issues are personal to Ellis who has twin cousins with Autism.
