Seventeen year old Asri Satyaswari has traded the sandy beaches and busy marketplace of her hometown in Bali, Indonesia for an exchange year in the rolling cornfields and rural living of Minden, Nebraska through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Her decision to pursue a year abroad was greatly influenced by her family.
“My father and my auntie did exchange when they were in college or high school. My auntie went to Canada and my sister is going to college in Germany right now. They are the ones who inspired me to try a new culture, different language, and new place,” Asri explained.
She will stay with two different host families during her exchange. She began the school year with David and Dena Beck and their daughters Chloe and Sloane. After Christmas she will stay with Dave and Tiffinie Arnold and their daughters Bailey, Cassie, and Olivia.
