Martha Johnson - July 21, 2013

Martha “Marian” (Forsberg) Johnson, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center.
Marian was born on Aug. 19, 1918, on the family farm two miles south of the Bethany Lutheran Church near Axtell in Kearney County, the fourth of five children born to Frans Emil and Jennie Eleese (Benson) Forsberg.
As a young child, Marian never liked the name Martha and always went by Marian.
She attended the Bethany Lutheran Church, where she was baptized on Oct. 6, 1918.
In 1921 the family moved to Holdrege where she resided the rest of her life. She was confirmed at the Bethel Lutheran Church on July 9, 1933, and continued being a faithful member the remainder of her life. She participated in many church organizations and taught Sunday School for many years.
She received her primary education at Roosevelt School in Holdrege and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the Class of 1936. Following her education, Marian worked as a secretary at the Phelps County Creamery (also known as the Omaha Cold Storage).
Marian was introduced to J. Howard Johnson in December of 1943 and they were united in marriage on Sept. 21, 1944, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege and to this union two children were born: Beverly Joan and James Howard. Marian and Howard’s early married life was spent living on a farm north of Funk, where Howard engaged in farming with his father and brothers.
In 1946, Marian and Howard moved to a farm southwest of Holdrege, where Howard continued to farm and Marian enjoyed the life of a farmer’s wife and homemaker.
Over the years, she was a member of the “Country Coffee Club” and also a group called “The Sewing Club,” where ladies worked on their crocheting, knitting and needlepoint projects. Marian also enjoyed playing the piano and organ.
In 1975, Howard and Marian moved into Holdrege to the home they built. In January 2011, she began to make her home at the Christian Homes Care Community, where she resided until her passing.
In their retirement years, they enjoyed spending time with family, especially family gatherings. They traveled worldwide with friends and wintered in Arizona for many years with other area snowbirds. They also enjoyed dancing together for many years.
