Eleanor Lange - October 10, 2012

Eleanor H. (Laue) Lange, 97, of Kearney and formerly of the Gibbon-Lowell-Newark areas died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Eleanor was born Sept. 9, 1915, seven miles southwest of Kearney to Samuel and Louise (Nickel) Laue.
She attended the Old Fort Kearney school known as District 18 for 8 years and graduated from Kearney Longfellow High School in 1932.
She was married to Dale Sheldon Lange on Feb. 26, 1936, at the Buffalo County Courthouse in Kearney by County Judge, J.M. Easterling.
In their first year of marriage and farming their crops were hailed out. Dale took a job at the Newark sandpit working seven days a week at 75 cents a day. Their corn crop was picked by hand that fall in a single box wagon and then put in five bushel baskets and carried upstairs to be stored for seed the following spring.
Their total savings the first summer was 90 dollars which was kept in a sugar bowl. They spent one dollar a week for gas and 80 cents a week for groceries the first year. Eleanor and Dale lived their entire married life in the Newark and Lowell communities farming and raising their five children until moving to Kearney in 2005.
Eleanor was a hard worker. She always had a large garden that the family enjoyed in the summer. There was always plenty of fruit and vegetables canned for the winter. Her Parker House rolls and her pies were out of this world.
Eleanor’s other hobbies included quilting, crocheting and sewing clothes for her family. She was a beautiful seamstress. Eleanor and Dale always looked forward to their Saturday night square dancing and card clubs. She also looked forward to having coffee at the neighborhood ladies birthday club.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lowell where she was confirmed on June 13, 1982, by Pastor Gustafson.
She is survived by her daughters, E. Virgene Loeffelholz of Gibbon, Karen Hartman and husband, Alvin, of Gibbon, and Ginger Holl and husband, Kent, of Elwood; sons, Richard Lange and wife, Julia, of Gibbon and William Lange of Kearney; 18 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
