Edna Slater - July 26, 2012

Edna May Slater, 97 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege.
She was born March 9, 1915, south of Holdrege, in Harlan County, the only child born to Harvey Montrose and Gertrude Blanche (Saul) Ramick.
She received her early primary education from School District 41 west of Atlanta.
When she was nine years old, her mother died of Brights Disease and she and her father moved near Minden to be near his married sisters so they might help raise Edna. She then attended school in Minden graduating from Minden High School with the Class of 1933.
She then attended Normal School in Kearney. After receiving her Normal School training, she taught four terms in rural Kearney County schools: Osco No. 6, Ashgrove No. 31 and Window No. 60.
While teaching at Ashgrove near Norman, she met Joe Slater. On May 23, 1937, she was united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Minden to Christian Aljo “Joe” Slater and to this union four children were born: James Harvey, Robert Aljo, John Wesley and Beverly Jane.
The family made their home farming near Holstein and Blue Hill. They bought the former Hardin Yensen Ranch near Lowell and maintained a registered herd of Polled Shorthorn cattle.
In 1956 the family moved to Holdrege. After retirement, the couple moved to Atlanta. Joe and Edna enjoyed wintering in Arizona during retirement. Joe passed away on Oct. 13, 1989.
She enjoyed playing the piano, traveling, playing golf, bowling, gardening and crossword puzzles.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
Survivors include her three sons: James H. Slater of Shelton, Robert A. Slater and wife, Sandra, of Holdrege, John W. “Jack” Slater and wife, Christine, of Atlanta; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ira Slater and wife, Dora, of Hastings; sister-in-law, Dorothy Slater of Eldora, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and her husband, Joe, Edna was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Jane Slater in infancy; grandson, Wesley Mark Slater; daughter-in-law, Shirley Slater; five brothers-in-law, Grant Slater, Roswell Slater and wife, Lurene, John Slater and wife, Marie, Allan Slater; sisters-in-law, Zella Fish and husband, Joe, Irma Brocker and husband, Bill, Eva Knott and husband, Roy.
Memorial services were conducted July 30 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege with the Rev. Dale Lambert officiating.
A memorial has been established in her memory and kindly suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
A private family interment was in the Minden Cemetery prior to services.
The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
