Roy Lammers - January 08, 2012


Roy William Lammers, 93, of Hagerstown, Md., formerly of Durant, Iowa, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at home.
Roy was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Upland, the son of the late Chris and Dora Lammers.
He worked for 37 years as an independent distributor for Midway Oil Co., in Durant. He also drove school bus for the Durant Community Schools and drove cars for the Ron Alpen Ford Company in Durant.
He was a Navy veteran of WWII and served as an airplane mechanic on the aircraft carrier, the USS Antietam. He enjoyed meeting with others at the WWII “Round Table” on Tuesdays at the Northern Avenue Legion.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 0430 in Durant for 67 years.
He enjoyed bowling in his younger years and sponsored his own bowling team. He was a Boy Scout leader for eight years in Durant.
He cared for his community of Durant by serving on the town council for 14 years and as mayor for 12 years. He was an avid gardener and loved to grow flowers and vegetables for himself and others. He was famous for his homemade applesauce. His other hobby was woodworking and making furniture and crafts for family and friends.
He was a long-time member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Durant and later became an associate member of Haven Lutheran Church in Hagerstown when he moved to Maryland to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Ed Distad.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his dear friend, Ann Marie Langman; his friends of the Durant community; daughters, Bonita C. Distad and husband, Ed, of Hagerstown, Md., and Pat Lammers and husband, Lee Costa, of Bowdoin, Maine; granddaughter, Nancy Schroyer (Brian Denton) of Carlisle, Pa.; grandson, W. Brad Distad and wife, Jessica, of Yuba City, Calif. He dearly loved his great-grandchildren, Becca Schroyer, Naomi and Oliver Distad. He is also survived and lovingly remembered by his siblings, Julietta Lammers and Donald Lammers and wife, JoAnn, all of Minden; Ralph Lammers and wife, Joanne, of Arapahoe, William Lammers of Denver, Colo.; sister-in-law, Mae Eriksen of Moscow, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings, and Helen, his wife of 62 years.
The family celebrated his life at Haven Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Md., Jan. 15 with the Rev. Linda Alessandri officiating. A second celebration of life will be held in Durant, Iowa, in July of 2012.
